Pressing CD:s

What does people think about CD:s nowadays? I am a little uncertain myself. I really like to have good music on a physical format, but it is hopeless to do them: slow, bureaucratic and all that. We had to have a lot of permissions from copyright organizations and all that, and the pressing is a little special. It was not expensive at all though: 1000 CD:s for 1100 euros. Not bad at all. But it takes a month from sendig the master to recieving the parcels. Will people buy them?

I got one insight last week: You cant send a bunch of MP3:s as a present to someone. It is just not a valid thing to do. There is no work involved, you probably havent put any money in and its very boring. “Here you go – a zip file. Happy birthday!”. No, there you need a physical format. Ok, a burned CD with former MP3:s, just like the old mixtape we used to share. But a real, expensive, pressed CD that smells of ink and glue. Isnt that nicer?

They’re nice to have on the shelf and sometimes a band will come up with an interesting change to the “plastic box/paper liner” format, Pearl Jam coem to mind, but otherwise, I can live without them. Well almost. Sadly I don’t have an iPod compatible car so in there it’s CDs for the time being. Come to think of it I don’t even have an iPod.

I found a load of my old vinyl albums recently, Sgt Peppers among others. The album artwork was fantastic in the large format, I have same album on CD, the artwork is wasted.

As a present a “real” cd is nicer than a zipped file, though I’m sure we’re not far in time from being able to use iTunes to “send” presents to people.

If you want to make a distribution worthwhile, why not offer a multitracked version. Seperate your tracks into drums, vocals, guitars and everything else. An ableton live file where everything is already warped and cut into appropriate clips would be a welcome addition.

This’ll let interested people create their own remixes and experience some of the creative process that goes on behind putting some tracks together. At the very least, people can make their own karoeke versions (I’d love to do my own guitar parts if your songs are any good).

This is of course much more important in the electronic dance music genres, where the DJ culture is already very well established. Really, if you are into this kind of music then it feels completely Stone Age to release a CD. But the idea is not limited to just those genres, look at http://www.ccmixter.com for a multi-genre remixing community, all CC licensed too.

These are the distribution formats of the future, just that no one has woken up to it yet.

Gramtone

Vissa spelar live, andra spelar in. Titta in, lyssna in, och häng med.
