(In english below, since my posts about Spotify are read internationally)
Swe: Vi fick just senaste kvartalsrapporten från vår viktigaste distributör, Phonofile i Norge.
Vilket Last FM faktiskt erbjuder enkelt.
Eng: We just got the latest quarter-report from our most important distributor, Phonofile in Norway. Nice guys, good communication and since they have all the fun webshops like Itunes and Spotify, its always exciting to get their reports. Like a small present each quarter.
Like in the last report, our most successful band, The Modesty, got quite a few plays. 4430 plays in these three months. Which is quite alright, I think. It gave them 5,53 swedish crowns (which is about 0,5 Euros).
I’m starting to think about what Spotify really is. Themselves, they say that they are an equivalent to commercial radio – and gives the musicians more money than in that medium. Which is true. But in practice I think they become a substitute for buying music. Because people wont buy either CD:s or MP3:s when they can listen for free on Spotify? So the risk is that Spotify makes musicians poorer in the end. 4430 plays… That could equal several hundred CD-buys, or maybe 1000 MP3-buys. Which of course would render a significantly higher income för the musicians. So the question is what to think. What do the audience think?
One important aspect is if people come by our music in some form of radiofunction, where I could conclude the marketing value. Or if people specifically search for the bands, to listen to their music for free. The marketing is particularly valuable. But we lack the access to statistics about that from Spotify. Which Last FM does offer easily.
By the way, here are our bands on Spotify:
